The birth of Apsaras from the Churning of the Sea of milk is the foundation of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia. These celestial dances have endured much turmoil almost leading it to extinction. During the 1950s, Queen Sisowath Kosomak helped revive Cambodia’s Royal Ballet. Unfortunately much of its culture almost became extinct during the Khmer Rouge era. Since 1979, survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide helped restore the dances by educating younger generations in order to help preserve Cambodia’s cultural treasure.
