In March 9, 1945 Cambodia, which has been a French Protectorate, is invaded by Japan. At Bokor, colonel HASEGAWA confiscates a hotel in the city and claims independence for Cambodia from France. The colonel meets ROSETTE who is half Cambodian, half French, and the owner of a vegetable and flower garden. Because he falls in love with her, the colonel always gives ROSETTE secret protection. At this time, Cambodians are divided into two different groups. One supports the French and another supports the Japanese, the liberators. The French colonials and the Cambodians who back the French flee into the forest in order to fight against the invaders. ROSETTE’s uncle and sister in law are shot to death and her younger brother is imprisoned. A few months later, in August 16, 1945 the Japanese military is defeated by the British. Before leaving Cambodia, the colonel helps to get her brother released from jail. Cambodia claims its independence.
